EMI provides supports, training and follow-up for individuals seeking community based employment. Each individual will have their skills, interests, endurance and other key factors for successful employment assessed. Once the assessment is complete, an assigned employment specialist and the job developer will create a job development plan and strategy to approach businesses in seeking employment. The match of an individual's skills and interests with the needs of the business is crucial to assuring successful and sustainable employment.

For each job match and placement, the assigned employment specialist will learn the job first by visiting the place of employment by himself or herself. The employment specialist will conduct a job analysis to determine what tasks should be taught during the training period. Upon completion of the job analysis, the employment specialist will begin teaching the individual all the necessary tasks. The progress of the individual will be measured objectively and once they are independent in performing the task or are able to complete the tasks with the support of co-workers, the employment specialist will develop a schedule for fading out formalized supports. When supports are faded out, the employment specialist will arrange for regular follow-up visits with the employer. If necessary, the employment specialist will return to provide more intensive teaching supports.
