Supported Living
 |
The Arc of East Middlesex, Inc. has several openings in an apartment building we own in Wakefield. There are four 2-bedroom apartments and on-site laundry. Up to four individuals may be accepted. All qualified tenants are eligible to receive Section 8 housing assistance as the building is a Section 8 building.
Support services will be provided by mentors from our Supported Living team. A minimum of 10 hours a week must be purchased. Supports may be privately paid of funded by DMR for individuals who receive funding. In addition to rental subsidies, we will assist individuals in receiving food stamps, energy subsidies and PCA services if eligible. For more information or to arrange an eligibility assessment, contact Jo Ann Simons, Executive Director.

| Supported living has been designed to provide an environment in which an adult can achieve as much independence as possible. Within walking distance to stores, restaurants, parks, community services and public transportation, our settings are particularly ideal for young adults moving from post-graduate educational settings or from home. |

Our apartments typically are air-conditioned, have a living room/dining room, kitchen, full bathroom, two bedrooms, ample closets and separate basement storage. Laundry facilities are located on the premises. |
|
In order to make supported living affordable, Section 8 vouchers are accepted and we coordinate other benefits such as fuel assistance, SSI and food stamps. Residents obtain supports through an individualized menu of services available through contract with The Arc of East Middlesex. Services may include job training, money management, health care, cooking and other daily living skills.
Since there will be no regular evening or weekend support provided, individuals must demonstrate their ability to live with the available level of support. Emergency coverage will be available through a 24 hour mobile phone and pager system. |
|
Each tenant will be able to access activities through The Arc of East Middlesex's Social and Recreation programs. The Arc of East Middlesex operates a year-round program which includes a self-advocacy club, social clubs for men and women, trips, Special Olympics, outdoor adventures and many competitive sports.
Individuals must be at least 18 and older and have a diagnosis of mild developmental or learning disability, have the ability to live without 24-hour supports and be self-medicating.

The first step in the referral process is the completion of the Request for Services Package. After this package is complete, an interview with the individual and family will occur. The final step in the referral process will be an actual assessment of the individual, which may include evaluations in cooking, housekeeping, banking, healthcare, life and safety skills.
Individuals supported by The Arc of East Middlesex are typically funded through a combination of:
-
Private fees paid by the individual and/or families
-
State funding from the Department of Mental Retardation or other state agency where available
-
Local and Federal Housing Rental subsidies
Residents and their families will be able to have as much input as desired into the operation of this setting. For more information, you may also call or email Tina Claydon, Director of Residential Services, at 781-942-4888, ext. 4037.
